| Two Police battalions for state unemployed youth | | |
Jammu, November 5 : The recruitment board constituted by the state government will soon begin screening of more than 20,000 application forms of unemployed youth for raising two more battalions of state police. The aim behind raising two more battalions of state police force is to augment shortfall of foot soldiers required for routine duties. After several companies of the BSF were withdrawnfrom the state adequate number of companies of CRPF were not sent to the state. This also called for raising additional police battalions. In addition, the state government is toying with the idea of involving police in counter insurgency operations for better coordiantion with the paramilitary and army. Improvement in general policing, and expansion of intelligence network of state police is also on top of agenda of the state police force behind this expansion. Official sources said that the recently centre has given clearance for raising five additional police battalions and so far sanction has been given to raising two battalions. According to these sources,DIGs would head each recruitment board and so far more than 20,000 applications from the unemployed youth had been received. The sources said that recruitment will be made from all the 14 districts in the state. Prior to the rise of militancy in 1990 the total police strength in the state was 30,000.The figure remained stationary till 1996.After that several battalions were added besides a large battery of special police officers(SPOs),Exservicdemen and village defence committees. Official sources said that the police strength at present is about 75,000 and if the numer of SPOs,exservicemen and VDCs was added the figure will touch about one lakh. A senior police officer of the rank of DIG said today that even after adding five new battalions the police may not be fully equipped to take on the militants unless policemen, including officials, were given latest weapons. He said equipping the police with modern weapons could help the Government in further strengthening the security grid on the LOC and in the border villages where infiltrators take shelter soon after crossing the LOC. He said there was need for increasing the number of intelligence sleuths who could be posted in farflung villages where militants have carved out safe sanctuaries. |
