| Army aviation Corps celebrates 20th anniversary | | | Udhampur 05 Sep The Army Aviation Corps Celebrated its 20th Anniversary yesterday with a get-together of officers at the Satwari Bombers Officers Mess at Udhampur. Lt Gen Deepak Kapoor, Army Commander, Northern Command was the chief guest at the event. Army Aviation Corps being a new arm, has achieved great laurels in this short span of time. This has been possible only due to rich and old traditions and customs of erstwhile Air Observation Post (AOP). The history of AOP dates back to pre independence days when 659 AOP Squadron of Royal Air Force was raised on Apr 30, 1942. Formed on November 1, 1986, the Army Aviation Corps has displayed high professionalism in all operations undertaken by the Army and has contributed to the international peace by being part of UN peacekeeping force, earning laurels for itself and the country. It proved it mettle by displaying an exemplary performance during the national crisis created by natural calamities or man-made alike. Whether it was earthquake in Bhuj and northern borders, floods in various parts of the country, handling threat of Pareechu or mid-aid collision of civil passenger jetliners, the quick reaction and timely assistance provided by aviation units had saved numerous lives. At the Northern Command Headquarters, the Army Aviation branch is being headed by Brigadier IK Kanwar. |
