Early Times Report

Jammu,December 9:-Whether on account of good or wrong reasons China no longer is a country that exists in isolation. This is evident from the way as many as 20 countries have supported Beijing in its boycott of the Nobel peace prize ceremony. The countries that will, like China, boycott the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony include Pakistan,Iran,Sudan,Russia,Columbia,SaudiArabia,Nepal,Iraq
Cuba,Sri Lanka and Morocco.
China took the stand on boycotting the ceremony in protest against awarding the peace prize to the jailed Chinese dissident,Liu Xiabo.India has decided to attend the ceremony indicating that New Delhi does not want to follow the footsteps of two of its known foes,China and Pakistan.
One important lesson from the Chinese boycott is that Beijing has succeeded in extending its area of influence among those countries that are not quite happy with the American policy against terrorism. In this category fall countries like Iran,Iraq,Afghanistan,Pakistan,Saudi Arabia. It means that important muslim countries have joined hands with China because of growing influence of Pakistan on muslim countries.
In fact the muslim world feels uncomfortable with the US engagement in Iraq,Afghanistan,Pakistan, and to some extent in Iran.Hence to give vent to their anger these countries have preferred China to the west.
No doubt Pakistan has received and continues to receive military and non-military aid from Washington worth billions of dollars Islamabad has prferred to partner with China to the USA.This is so because Islamabad thinks that bigger partnership with Beijing could keep India under check.
Since India has given a snub to China by joining those countries that are participating in the Nobel peace prize ceremony it is to be seen whether the distance between Delhi and Beijing gets narrowed down during the Chinese premeir Wen Jiabao's visit to India.
New Delhi has armed itself for discussing with the Chinese premier a number of issues that have strained the relations between the two neighbours.India plans to take up the issue of stapled visa to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir, activities of Chinese firms in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, increasing sales of military hardware to Pakistan and China-Pak civil nuclear cooperation.
Indications are that China may concede some of the demands of India in order to promote cordial ties.Beijing has already developed very close relations with Pakistan and it may try to cultivate India by granting a few concessions that could safeguard China's trade interests in India.Yes,China is keen to promote bilateral trade instead of cementing political ties with India. This is evident from the way a 30-member trade delegation is accompanying the Chinese premier.
No doubt India has snubbed China by not joining those nations that were boycotting the Nobel peace prize ceremony,New Delhi cannot afford to annoy Beijing when besides Pakistan,Nepal,Sri Lanka, Russia,Saudi Arabia,Ian and Iraq have jumped into the Chinese bandwagon.Cordial and peceful ties with China could help India reduce expenses on defence that was needed for giving a bigger push to economic growth in the country.
And if the Chinese premier accepted India's demand for scrapping issuance of stapled visa to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir it could
be a big snub to Pakistan that has been actually responsible for motivating Beijing to treat Kashmir as a disputed territory through a novel practice of differentiating people of Jammu and Kashmir from rest of the Indin states.(eom)
