| Eunuchs declared as 'males', officially! | | Substantial rise in sex workers, homosexuals | | B L KAK NEW DELHI, NOV. 5: India's national capital has, over the years, witnessed a substantial rise in sex workers and homosexuals. Delhi State AIDS Control Society's startling revelation: Commercial sex workers in the city is well over 30,000. The number of 'male homosexuals' has also registered a substantial increase. Delhi AIDS Control Society has got a survey conducted through an organisation, which reveals that the total number of commercial sex workers in the Union capital is 35,062, up from the earlier known figure 5,000. The number of 'male homosexuals' has been placed at 7,532. And the number of eunuchs is estimated to be over 7,320. The organisation, which was engaged by the Delhi AIDS Control Society, took four months to conduct the survey. As many as 45,000 people were interviewed. According to the survey, the number of stretchildren in Delhi is 35,450. Of them, as many as 35,000 have no local guardians. The survey has also revealed that the areas of operations of the commersial sex workers have spread far and wide. Earlier, such activities were limited to a few areas, including Sradhanand Marg. New areas of operatrions identified in the survey include Rohini, Bawana, Madangir, Trilokpuri, Nangloi and Pandava Nagar. In fact, a total of 276 places have been identifed as areas of operation of the commercial sex workers. The survey has also brought to the fore that 'male homosexuals' are operating at as many as 117 places in Delhi. These places, interestingly, inc luded areas around the Delhi University, Patparganj, Mayur Vihar, Anand Parvat and Punjabi Bagh. Eunuchs are operating from 171 places in the city. These areas include Shahdara, Bawana, Nangloi and slum clusters along the Yamuna. Eunuch, it is universally known, is a castrated man--an ineffectual person. And it is established, beyond doubt, that the eunuch possesses a conditon in which there is some deficiency of sexual development and in which certain female sex characteristics are often present. This irrefutable fact notwithstanding, eunuchs in the Union Territory of Delhi have been categorised as 'males' in the 2001 census. Thefact that the census enumerators possessed copies of detailed questionnaire became an open secret well before the operations were formally launched. Considering the fact that there was no separate box for 'eunuch' in the printed questionnaire, the census staff had to be told to put 'eunuch' in the list of 'male'! What really astounded a set of enumerators was the protest from a group of eunuchs, after they were informed that the officially prepared questionnaire did not contain a separare colum or box for their 'eunuch'. The agitated eunuchs wanted each one of tghem to be placed in a separate category--not male, not female! ================
