Govt neglects tourism sector in Jammu region’ | | | Early Times Report
Jammu,Dec 9 -Despite the fact that the central Government has agreed to provide financial assistance to various projects aimed at developing tourism infrastructure, sporadic incidents of violence in Kashmir continue to affect the flow of tourists to the valley. Official sources said that a project estimated to cost over Rs.162 crores has been sanctioned for upgrading the infrastructure in various tourist resorts in the state after the central Government announced to finance the project.
Though last year the total number of tourists, including pilgrims, touched a new high when the state played host to 92.89 lakh visitors. But out of this over 82 lakh were pilgrims to Mata Vaishnov Devi Shrine and over three lakh Amarnath pilgrims. This means that pilgrim traffic to Jammu and Kashmir has become the backbone of the stat's economy.
Experts connected with the promotion of tourism industry opine that lack of infrastructure and delay on the part of the Government in developing tourist resorts in the Jammu region have been one of the reasons for drop in tourist traffic to Jammu and Kashmir. These experts say that since militancy related violence had forced tourists and excursionists to opt for safer areas for rest and relaxation the Government should have developed new tourist resorts in the Jammu region. They said that the region abounds in scenic spots in Doda, Kishtwar, Udhampur belts besides a number of lakes but these sites have neither been developed nor projected in the state's tourism promotion campaign.
They also said that the state Government failed to mount pressure on the Government of India for prevailing on those countries that had issued advisories against travel to Jammu and Kashmir. They said the state should prevail upon the centre to motivate several nations to withdraw their advisories about travel to Jammu and Kashmir.
Besides this those connected with tourism development activities simply projected resorts and lakes of Kashmir. The campaign managers usually ignored Jammu which was another reason for the drop in tourist arrival in the state. The experts said that if tourist resort in the Jammu region were developed with the development basic infrastructure vistitors, who were not ready to travel to Kashmir because of security risk, could spend days and weeks in Jammu resorts.
They demanded that a separate master plan for development of tourist resorts in Jammu region including the Patnitop area,be formulated and work on the project be started as early as possible. |
