Kashmir freezes at minus 3.8 degree Celsius | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 10: Parts of the world famous Dal Lake were partially frozen near banks as the summer capital Srinagar witnessed yet another coldest night after the minimum dipped to minus 3.8 degree Celsius. However, famed ski resort of Gulmarg was coldest with minus 5.2 degreesminimum temperature while it was minus five at Pahalgam. People in Ladakh region continued to shiver with night temperature between minus 11 to minus 25 degrees. A correspondent who visited Dal Lake in the heart of the city this morning saw parts of the lake frozen near banks at several places. Shikarawalas were seen breaking the frozen parts to reach the bank (ghat) on Cheshmashahi side. Interior parts of the Dal were also frozen. The water level has also decreased, clearly visible near banks. However, the frozen parts were melting as the day progressed due to above normal maximum temperature. Dal was completely frozen first in 1965 when a jeep crossed from one end to another on frozen surface. It was again in 1987 when the water in the lake was completely frozen, attracting thousands of local and outside tourists daily. Children were playing snow hockey and other sports while elders, including film personalities, were posing for photographs, recalled a Ghulam Mohammad, a houseboat owner. He said the water was also crystal clear then. A weather office spokesman said that Srinagar witnessed yet another coldest night of the season so far after the minimum dipped to minus 3.8 degrees against yesterdays minus 3.4 degrees. However, on December 8 it was minus 3.8 degrees during night. It was 2.8 degrees below normal. Taps, nallahs and ponds were also frozen in the city and outskirts.
