EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, December 11: The stage is set for the prestigious All India Inter-University (men and women) Fencing Championship being hosted by the University of Jammu (JU) here on the campus from December 14.
A record number of 32 universities, as against 18 took part last year, have already confirmed their entries for this mega event which shall last for three days under the guidance of officials from Fencing Federation of India and State Fencing Association.
This was disclosed by the Dean Academic Affairs (DAA) of JU, Prof R D Sharma in an interaction with media persons on the campus here this afternoon.

“About 600 fencers in both men and women sections shall be there to compete for the top honours in this three-day national event being hosted by JU under the banner of Association of Indian Universities (AIU),” informed Prof Sharma.

Defending champions in men’s section and third position holders in women category, JU has put in great efforts to raise competitive teams to give improved performance.
“Since JU won the men’s overall championship last year, we have left no stone unturned to provide the probable best of the training to retain the title. An improved performance is expected in women’s category,” he said adding, “A 15-day camp was organised to train the JU teams under the guidance of international fencer, Rashid Ahmed and Sports Council coach, Shotu Lal.”
However, JU was yet to name the final teams for the competition ahead. “We shall be finalizing the teams by December 13, a day before the event starts,” Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau told.

The competition shall be declared open by Governor, N N Vohra, who happens to be Chancellor of the host University.
“Elaborate arrangements have been made for the comfortable stay of the participating teams at different places in and around city,” Registrar of JU, Dr PS Pathania informed.
As for as infrastructure is concerned, JU has obtained two `Fists’, arena to play on, from Fencing Federation of India and one from the J&K State Sports Council. Due to paucity of funds at the disposal of JU, the event is partially sponsored by the J&K Bank Ltd.
