Srinagar city freezes at minus 5.2
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Dec 11: Srinagar witnessed the coldest night of the season after the mercury dipped to minus 5.2 degrees Celsius, freezing the Dal Lake, taps, nallahs and ponds.
However, the day temperature was several degrees above normal despite chilly winds sweeping the region. A weather office spokesman told news agencies that temperature will drop further in next week because of no Western Disturbances (WD).
WD, originating in Arabian Sea and entering the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, had arrived in the summer capital few days ago he said. Spokesman said the minimum in Srinagar was recorded at minus 5.2 degrees, lowest of the season so far.
Water in the Dal Lake, major tourist attraction in the heart of the city, was again frozen at several places, particularly near the banks, as the minimum temperature in that part would be between minus 6 and minus 7 degrees. Shikarawalas were seen making way through frozen surface to reach other parts of the lake.
