| ‘Bawa Jitto’ enlivens Jhiri festival | | | EARLY TIMES REPORTER JAMMU | NOV 5 The Jhiri festival was enlivened by the performance of Dogri Play ‘Bawa Jitoo’. This was the rarest occasion for the thousands of the audience to live through a saga of great sacrifice, of a landless farmer against the landlords. Scripted by Prof. Ram Na th Sahrstri and presented by Natrang directed by Balwant Thakur this 15th century real tale has a strong social message that it is relevant till today. Director of the play while opening the play said that it was a big dream for the Natrang team to stage at Jhiri. This play was first produced in 1986 and has been staged over hundred time all over the country. It took 20 years to bring this production to the place where Bawa Jitto sacrificed his life 600 years ago. Deputy Commissioner, Jammu Hridesh Kumar Singh also the chairman of Jhiri Mela committee for taking initiative to bring Bawa Jitto live his devotees. In the story, Bawa Jitto takes refuse to a nearby village Shamachak to escape from the harassment of his own relatives. Here with the help of one of his old friends he succeeds in getting a piece of batten land for cultivation on the condition that he will give one forth of the produce to the landlord. With his had efforts he turns the barren piece of land to a most fertile land. The greedy landlord decides to take away the whole produce and the hapless Jitto unable to endure injustice kills himself
