Tithwal Brigade celebrates “Shantaram Day” | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 12: “Shantaram Day” was celebrated by Tithwal Brigade on today with wreath laying at War Memorial LoC at Lam. On this day in the year 1971 during the Indo-Pak war a vital post of the enemy named Sukhabanan was captured by the valiant Indian soldiers of the 4/9 Gorkha Rifles (Chindits Battalion) fighting bravely and instilling fear into the enemy.This was one of the major successes of Indian Army during 1971 war in the Nowshera Sector. In this Operation, Second Lieutenant Shantaram of 4/9 Gorkha Rifles, with utter disregard for his personal safety, led his troops to victory and made the supreme sacrifice. The Pak post of Sukhabanan was then renamed as Shantaram in the honour of this valiant officer. To celebrate the occasion a havan was performed and subsequently, wreath laying was carried out at Shantaram post and at the memorial at Lam base. Commander, Tithwal Brigade and 11 members of 4/9 Gorkha Rifles attended the ceremony to pay homage to martyrs. Commander Tithwal Brigade also met and felicitated the locals who had assisted the Army during the Operation in the sector. People were happy to relive their association with the battle fought years ago.
