DIG declares open Manjit memorial NZ cricket tourney

EARLY TIMES REPORT
KATHUA, December 12: Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of J&K Police, Farooq Khan today declared open the DySP Manjit Singh Memorial Twenty20 North Zone level Cricket Tournament at Sports Stadium, here.
In the opening match of the day, Gaziabad (UP) XI registered 38 runs victory over Domana Cricket Club Jammu.
Earlier, Gaziabad XI won the toss and batting first set a target of 148 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Gourav Tomar was top scorer with 27 runs while Abu Bakar and Amit Thakur contributed 23 and 27 runs respectively. From Domana Club, Manjit was most successful bowler with three wickets.
In reply, Domana could not maintain the required run rate and later, in an attempt to add quick runs, lost the wickets. The whole side bowled out for 109 runs. For his all round performance, Gourav was declared man of the match.
Earlier, before he declared open the event, DIG paid tributes to Manjit Singh, who laid down his life while fighting the insurgents in an operation at district Poonch in March 2003.
He recalled the services of the brave officer and expressed his sympathy towards the grieved family members and friends, who were present in the function. The chief guest complimented the organising committee of the tournament for holding a sports event in memory of an officer of the district.
Additional SP Kathua, Anil Magotra was guest of honour in the well attended inaugural function.
Prominent among others present were Jagbir singh, Ravinder Slathia, Pankaj Dogra, Rakesh Singh Sumbria, Prashant Singh Mithu, Rakesh Singh Sambyal, Sanjay Pathak, Vijay Singh Badwal and Manmohan Singh.
