No respite from cold, Phalgam coldest | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 12: There was still no respite from the cold though the night temperature, still below normal, has improved, in the Kashmir valley, where day temperature remained above normal. Health resort Pahalgam in south Kashmir, witnessed the coldest night of the season when the minimum temperature dipped to minus 6.4 degrees. Against minus 5.2 degrees yesterday, Srinagar recorded minus 4 degrees during the night, three degrees below normal. Portion of the Dal Lake near banks remained frozen. Taps, ponds and Nallahas were also frozen due to severe cold. However, the frozen water starts melting as the day progressed. World famous health resort, Pahalgam, base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas recorded coldest night of the season so far when the minimum temperature dipped to minus 6.4 degrees this morning. The lowest so far was minus 5.6 degrees. The water level in the river Lidder has also dropped because the snow on upper reaches got frozen, the main source of river. The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg recorded minus 5 degree minimum temperature against yesterdays' minus 5.6 degree. Kupwara, a frontier district in north Kashmir also recorded about minus 5 degrees followed by Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway minus 4.8 degree and Kokernag minus 4 degrees. People in Ladakh region continued to shiver because of minimum temperature dipping further. At Leh it was minus 16.6 degrees during the night against minus 10.8 degrees and Kargil minus about 12 degrees against yesterdays minus 10.8 degree. Drass, the coldest place in the world after Siberia it was minus 20 degrees. However, in the upper reaches it was between minus 16 degrees to minus 25 degrees
