| It is a grave security failure | | Romantic trio crash PM bungalow's inner gates | | SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, JULY 28: Two girls and a boy created history of sorts by driving up to the inner gates of the Prime Minister's bungalow on the 7, Race Course Road. With this unexpected event Thursday evening, top echelons in the police and security agencies are up in arms against the serious breach of sxecurity at the Prime Minister's residence. The trio, it is officially reckoned, successfully managed to drive up to the inner gates of the Prime Ministers' bungalow in a black Sonata, breezing past the security cardon at the main gate. Their reason was simple: they wanted to meet the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh.
Carefree and blowing kisses to the media stationed at PM’s residence, they seemed oblivious of the security lapse at one of the most secure addresses in India. The trio was identified as Yogita Khatwal (the girl who was driving the Sonata), Veena Chaudhary (Yogita’s friend sitting behind) and Imran (who was sitting in front with Yogita).
They were later intercepted by Delhi Police and taken to the Chanakyapuri Police Station for a joint interrogation by the SPG (Special Protection Group), police and other security agencies. They were also taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences for a breath test to establish whether they were under the influence of alcohol. However, they were given a clean chit by the hospital.
Yogita and Veena are from Jaipur and are employees of Air Sahara while Imran is a Delhiite. The car is registered in the name of one Zahid, a resident of Mehrauli in the Union capital. Yogita and Veena had been suspended about a month ago from Air Sahara following a series of complaints against them including drinking at work.
After the Thursday incident, both girls were sacked. “It is a breach of discipline and we do not encourage such indisciplinary behaviour. So we have sacked both the girls,” President Air Sahara, Alok Sharma, said.
While the youngsters shocked the nation with their brazen act, the Prime Minister's Office denied any security lapse. However, regardless of whether they are let off or booked under criminal trespassing, it is the security failure at the PM's residence that has left many questions unanswered.
How did the car manage to get pass the first security gate without as much as a basic frisking? Why did no one check with the appointment register to check if the trio had an appointment with the PM? ============
