Protestors block traffic, Police resorts to mild lathicharge | Desperate bid to open gates of Raghunath temple | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 13: Large number of protesters demanding reopening of Raghunath Temple gates and shifting of security forces from nearby Dharamshala were lathicharged by state police as they attempted to block traffic on the link road leading to famous temple. Before the lathicharge took place, large numbers of workers, activists of Jammu Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) led by state president Balwant Singh Mankoti alongwith workers of Kranti Dal, Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal staged a sit-in Dharna at Hari market and shouted slogans against the government for ignoring their demands. Protesters were demanding reopening of Raghunath temple gates to allow regular visitors free access inside the historic temple building. After staging Dharna, protesters assembled near Raghunath temple and made abortive bid to open gates of the temple. Sensing trouble, police personal on guard resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the mob. It may be mentioned here that after two back to back attacks on the Raghunath temple in March and November 2000, gates of the temple were closed down and security pickets came up. JKNPP leader B.S. Mankotia is spearheading campaign for past several months pressuring local administration to take final decision after reviewing security keeping in view the sentiments of the local people who visit the temple on regular basis
