Govt adopting draconian policy against media: BJP
12/14/2010 1:00:36 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 13: Senior BJP leader and convenor, BJP's Intellectual Cell Chander Mohan Sharma has charged the state administration with draconian policy of victimising nationalist media and for using coercive measures against them in Jammu.
It is long drawn policy of Omar Government to pressurise media to fall in line to the government dictates particularly newspapers of Jammu who are opposing anti-nationalist and separatists agenda through their writings.
Sharma said that the Omar Government was using Information department as an arm twisting henchmen by depriving the bold and fair reporting newspapers of Jammu of government advertisements. The funds for advertisements are not the personal property of Chief Minister or the Director Information who keep on discriminating the vocal newspapers of their equity by subverting the advertisement policy that too is crafty and such acts tantamount to suppressing voice of democracy.
He said the recent incident of coercing the Editor of leading vocal newspaper, Early Times by police and striking their business establishments with false cases speak volumes about the governments' stooping too low to browbeat and to choke the voice of a bold publication.
On the other hand media in Kashmir valley has been given a freedom to spit venom against Indian state, Army, Security forces and anything that bears Indian symbol. There is no check on police and Information department.
He hoped that good sense will prevail upon the chief minister to streamline the personal fiefdom of Director of Information who indulged malpractices and has been acting as an instrument of attack on democracy.
