| Alienating militants | | | The impetus of militancy appears to have hit the rock bottom in the areas of Mahore, Gul Gulabgarh and other interior helmets of Udhampur district. Already on the run to die to security forces pressure, they are barely able to obtain even minimum willing support from the locals. This change has driven them into the treacherous mountain where survival itself is extremely difficult. Concerned to the brink, the militants started killing unarmed and unprotected civilians to start with. However, an up beat civil populace geared up against theme and the civilians lead by the VDC’s countered this challenge too, most of the times successfully. The militants, however, still seem to be holding out deep in the mountains in their makeshift hideouts. Feeling frustrated at their freedom of terrorist activities being curbed by the security forces station, the terrorists are now resorting to reprisal/revenge killings. An 18 year young girl named Shameen of Mangolia was killed on 23 Sep because her father Mohd. Ahda Bhat refused to marry her off to a militant. The same desperadoes punished this family further by eliminating Mohd Ahda along with three ladies of the family, including Shameen’s mother on Nov 4 2006. All because Mohd Ahda defied the militant dictate. In a similar act of frustration militants shot dead Nisar Ahmed of Shadaul and seriously injured Bashir Ahmed of Ranglaen on Oct 30 last. Both the youngsters had protested and tried to escape while they were forcibly being taken away for training by the militants. Again a case of civil non cooperation and alienation with the militants. Where as such killing are dastardly and heinous, they too are alienating the militants more and more from the civilians, once their biggest strength. This alienation definitely will help the security forces in further freeing the area from the strong hold of militants. The militancy indeed is warning. The grit, determination and courage of the likes of Mohd. Ahda, Nisar Ahmed and Bashir will certainly lead us to an everlasting peace and stability in this region.
