Early Times Report
srinagar, Dec 13: Principal opposition party, PDP, today not only participated in the review meeting of District Development Board at Baramulla but also showered praises on the National Conference-led government and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's "dynamic's leadership".
Earlier in the middle of this year, PDP had boycotted all district development board meetings and maintained that there was no point in holding and attending such developmental meetings in the backdrop of "killing of innocent young children by Police and security forces".
Even as the party stalwarts, Muzaffar Hussain Baig (MLA Baramulla) and Maulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari (MLA Pattan), were not present in the first meeting of the series that began with Baramulla district today, PDP MLA from Kreeri, Syed Basharat Bukhari, not only participated in the meeting but also showered abundance of praises on Chief Minister and his government. While Baig was absent reportedly for health reasons, Ansari was said to be preoccupied with certain religious events on occasion of 7th day of Moharram in Srinagar.
Official sources present in the meeting said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah got a certificate of "impressive performance" to his government from the most unexpected quarters of the PDP. Broadcaster-turned-politician, Bukhari described Omar-led government as "well performing". He showered abundant praises on Omar's administration particularly for its performance and "maintenance of services and developmental works" during the five long months of street turbulence in the Valley.
Bukhari, according to sources, claimed that most of the developmental departments, including PWD, PDD, PHE, Irrigation besides Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD), had continued their activities notwithstanding "unprecedented hostile conditions". According to him, macadamisation of roads and electricity supply remained unaffected and the officials works hard all through the turbulence. He appreciated the government for maintaining ration supplies to consumers.
Sources said that Bukhari made a special reference to disbursement of ex gratia relief at the rate of Rs 5 Lakh among families of each of the civilians killed during the violent spell of turmoil. He stressed on the need to provide necessary pscho-social care to participants of the street demonstrations so that they could be retrieved from the path of turbulence and transformed into assets of the society.
An official press release said: "MLA, Sangrama, Mr. Basharat Bukhari, who attended the District Development Board meeting today at Baramulla, appreciated the government and district administration for continuing their work in the district despite recent turmoil period particularly by CA&PD, PHE, R&B, Rural Development, PDD etc. He also appreciated for providing Rs. 5 lakh to the youth killed during the turmoil but suggested that other youth may be given proper counselling and be rehabilitated so that their talent can be utilised in a positive manner".
Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, Chairman of District Development Board Baramulla, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, were among senior government functionaries who appreciated and enjoyed praises to the "good performance" of their administration. Chief Minister returned to the winter capital to participate in a meeting of the University Council of Jammu University but he is scheduled to hold similar meetings of the south Kashmir districts of Pulwama and Shopian on Tuesday.
Even after Bukhari's participation in today's meeting at Baramulla, much remains to be whether or not PDP MLAs would participate in the twin review meetings in south Kashmir tomorrow. PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti, is representing Wachi constituency of Shopian district while all the remaining five segments---Shopian, Pulwama, Rajpora, Pampore, Tral---are represented by the PDP MLAs. NC's MLC, Showkat Hussain Ganai, is one-odd member who would be representing the principal ruling party in the meeting. Broadcaster-turned-MP and NC's Rajya Sabha Member, Ghulam Nabi Rattanpuri, is also camping in the Valley to participate in the meeting.
