All India Inter-University Fencing Championship | JU women loses in QFs as PU Patiala wins gold in Sabre | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, December 14: The last year’s bronze medal winner in Sabre event, University of Jammu (JU) women could not repeat their performance and lost in quarterfinals in the All India Inter-University (Men and Women) Fencing Championship that started today at Gymnasium Hall of JU, here. The gold in women’s Sabre team event went to Punjabi University (PU) Patiala after the side defeated Kannur University Kannur in a well contested final. PU Patiala team: Taranpreet Kour, Kawalpreet Kour, Komalpreet Shukla and Kiranjot Kour. Kannur team: Rajeeshna, Megha Rechan, Bhavani Devi and Reshma Mureli. Third place in Sabre was shared by Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore (P Katarsalvi, L Viinothini, K Sararika and A Naveen Raj) and Avinashilingam University, Coimbatore (K Karthika, S Sardha, D Devi, S Sumithra) after latter lost to former in the hardliner. Earlier, in the semifinals, Punjabi University defeated Avinashilingam University while Kannur University trounced Anna University. Quarterfinals: Host JU (Seema Rani, Ishu Bharati, Shivani Hans and Monika Sharma) lost to Avinashilingam University; Punjabi University bt Periyar University Salem; Kannur University bt GNDU Amritsar; Anna University Coimbatore bt Kurukshetra University. Meanwhile, other team events of Sabre, Epee and Foil in both men and women sections were at the preliminary stages when the last reports were filed. In all, 29 universities are participating in this three-day championship in team and individual events under the banner of Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Earlier, the championship was declared open by Governor N N Vohra in a well attended function. Vice-Chancellor of host JU, Prof Varun Sahni presided. The chief guest in his address congratulated JU for hosting the mega event on the campus and wished the host men and women team success. He also interacted with the participating teams and witnessed demonstration fights between the host JU and fencers from visiting teams. Governor also felicitated JU fencers who brought laurels to the University winning gold in men’s section and bronze in women’s Sabre team event as also in individual events. Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau presented a detailed report of the championship before the distinguished gathering. Later, vote of thanks was presented by Registrar, Dr PS Pathania.
