Poor medical education affects healthcare quality: Tarigami

Jammu, December 14:- Assurance Committee has expressed dis-satisfaction over the working of Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) of Srinagar and Jammu, observing inadequate faculty in these premier medical institutions is telling upon quality of medical education.
The committee which met under the chairmanship of MLA M. Y Tarigami, called for posting of faculty members adequately for smooth functioning of the twin medical colleges. It observed that lack of teaching staff especially Professors and Associate Professors runs the risk of de-recognition of some disciplines by MCI.
The other members of the Committee, MLAs Charanjit Singh, Jugal Kishore and Durga Dass also underlined the need for paying focused attention on the health sector.
The Committee asked the Government to take necessary measures for posting of doctors, especially gynecologists in rural health institutions, observing that people of these areas are facing lot of hardships on account of non availability of specialist doctors.
The members made a special mention about the posting of Gynecologist in Gurez. They also suggested for providing CT Scan facilities in all health institutions of the state. Committee members also directed for implementation of assurances held out by the government on the floor of House.
Addressing the meeting, Tarigami said these institutions have a good reputation of producing doctors of national and international fame. He urged Government to be serious about the issue lest the problem will have spillover effect on the quality of healthcare.
Principal Secretary, Health, Dr. R. K. Jerath, Principal Government Medical College, Jammu, Dr. Rajinder Singh, Principal GMC Dr. Shahida Mir, Principal Government Dental College Dr. Romesh Singh, Managing Director NRHM, Dr. Yashpaul Sharma and other senior officers of Health and Medical Education and Assembly Secretariat attended the meeting.
