vPoor Policemen, Storekeepers Vilification campaign against Sham, Kashmiri Congress leaders dismiss him as "incompetent" | | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 14: To be a policeman is an insult. To be a policeman is a shame. To be a policeman is below one's dignity. Policemen are incompetent. They have no right to join politics and become minister. To be a storekeeper is also an insult; it is below one's dignity; the storekeepers are incompetent as well. They have, like policemen, no right to join politics or become minister. They need to be despised and kept away. In other words, policemen and storekeepers are the most inferior segments of society and they need to be kept away from the political arena because their entry into the political arena means giving respectability and legitimacy to incompetent. This scribe is not saying so. This scribe believes in the dignity of labour and is of the firm view that no profession is inferior. In fact, this scribe believes that those who work in the fields, for the Municipalities, maintain law and order, perform what those privileged few in the society call menial jobs and ply buses, taxis and autos play most important role in the society. The society would collapse the day they stop performing these functions. No profession is inferior. Everyone is inter-dependent. They are the backbone of the society. To despise them or to dismiss them as "incompetent" is a crime against humanity and God. Then, who has insulted, abused and ridiculed policemen and storekeepers and dismissed them as incompetent? And, why? In which context? The Kashmir-based Congress leaders, including JKPCC senior vice-president Muzaffar Parrey, have reportedly said so. In fact, a story in a local daily quotes verbatim what the likes of Parrey said on Sunday during the function, held at the PCC headquarters in Srinagar, on the death anniversaries of former Chief Ministers Ghulam Mohammad Sadiq and Mir Qasim and Ghulam Mohammad Mir Lasjan. Actually, they were condemning Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma for what he had said at Bani on December 5. Sham Lal had suggested the state's trifurcation as a solution to the Jammu problem, as also to the Ladakhi problem; he had condemned those who have demanding autonomy, self-rule and independence. What exactly did Parrey, according to the said report, said about Sham Lal Sharma? Parrey, "who was all fire against Sham Lal Sharma", according to the report, said: "He (Sham Lal Sharma) wasn't competent enough. He was first a policeman, later (a) storekeeper and now a minister. Sharma does not know anything about ministry. Congress men are angry." It was Muzzaffar Parrey who presided over the function. Parrey not only despised Sham Lal Sharma and dismissed him as incompetent, but he also criticized Tourism Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora. Why because he did not turn up to preside over the function. If what has appeared in the said daily is correct, then it can be said that the likes of Parrey have crossed all the lines. They have, undoubtedly, insulted the people of Jammu on whose behalf Sham Lal Sharma spoke. They have also insulted the community of policemen and storekeepers. Do they not have the right to join politics? They have every right to join it and play their role. Parrey should remember that it was the Congress high command which fielded some seven years ago as its presidential candidate Sushil Kumar Sinde against the BJP-led NDA's presidential candidate. Sinde had started his career as a policeman. Similarly, Bharon Singh Sekhawat also started his career as a policeman. The Kashmir-based Congress leaders must behave. They just can't despise the likes of Sham Lal Sharma, who have finally mustered courage and said what was right and correct. To despise them would be to cause an affront to the self-respect of the people of Jammu province, who have made up their mind to obtain what is their legitimate due and they know that trifurcation is the only panacea available. |
