But CM has strained relations with fourth estate! | Best Chief Minister? | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 14: On November 19, the first session of the India Today's State of State Conclave on 'Insurgency and development' was chaired by the Editorial Director of India Today MJ Akbar. He introduced the chief minister of Jammu Kashmir CM as the "flag bearer of his generation". The Chief Minister also addressed the conclave. He said: "insurgency has affected every aspect of the governance, something as basic as stopping cheating during examination, and something as important as the 'ability of the state generate and attract investment." One fails to understand which insurgency CM talked about. According to the state police, insurgency is over. Yes, the state was confronted with a new problem this year. The stone pelters called the shots this year. By blaming insurgency (which according to police does not exist) CM is escaping responsibility. In a bold interview with India today on August 6, CM said: "I am my own worst enemy. I haven't done enough to sell to the people what we've been doing." The people of Jammu Kashmir want to know what CM has been doing since he took over as Chief Minister of the state. The information department says CM held a public meeting at Srinagar which was attended by thousands of people. It also says another such meeting at Baramulla attracted thousands of farmers. What CM has been actually doing is enough to bring his graph of popularity to zero. It is widely believed that the state legislature grew increasingly intolerant during his regime. As many as three notices were issued to scribes in the winter session. They were directed to explain their position. The CM led government also used police to harass three Jammu based newspapers in July this year for publishing news circulated by CM's police. The onslaught on the fourth estate did not stop here. Scores of scribes were manhandled during the five month strike in Kashmir. The valley newspapers responded by suspending their publication. However, Political Advisor to CM begged them (with folded hands) to resume publication. Finding it difficult to woo the newspapers especially in Jammu region, the Chief Minister, who also happens to be the information minister, imposed economic sanctions on a newspaper. The undemocratic act has evoked widespread condemnation. Curiously some one rated CM as the best Chief Minister Jammu Kashmir had ever seen. A survey conducted by an NGO rated him as the best dressed politician. He also impressed the prime Minister with his presentation last year. The Prime Minister also praised him. There is no denying the fact that CM is always seen in a decent dress. It is also a fact that CM has extra-ordinary oratory skills. But, he needs to improve relations with the fourth estate. The sooner it happens, the better. |
