After good governance PDP plays responsible opposition | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 14: Jammu, Dec 14: After setting an example of good governance, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) achieved another milestone yesterday. It has now the distinction of behaving as a responsible opposition as well. Earlier, the PDP had boycotted all district development board meetings and maintained that there was no point in holding and attending such developmental meetings in the backdrop of "killing of innocent young children by Police and security forces". But, sensing that the developmental activities had been put on a hold, the PDP ended its boycott and participated in yesterday's board meeting at Baramulla. Although senior leaders like Iftikar Ansari and Muzaffar Beig abstained from the meeting, Basharat Bukhari surprised the Chief Minister by praising his `dynamic leadership'. Official sources admitted that the Chief Minister, who survived the five-month-strife because of New Delhi's support, got a certificate of "impressive performance" from most unexpected quarters. Broadcaster-turned-politician, Bukhari described CM-led government as "well performing". He showered abundant praises on CM's administration particularly for its performance and "maintenance of services and developmental works" during the five long months of street turbulence in the Valley. Interestingly CM Abdullah and his Law Minister, Ali Muhammad Sagar repeatedly accused PDP of patronizing, supporting and funding the stone pelters. Bukhari made no mention of these allegations during the meeting. On the contrary he made a special reference to disbursement of ex gratia relief at the rate of Rs 5 Lakh among families of each of the civilians killed during the violent spell of turmoil. A political activist said the PDP has scored a point by participating in the board meeting. "The PDP has shown it does not believe in opposition for the sake of opposition. Its primary concern is not politicking but serving the people. This must serve an eye opener to one and all", he said. The Chief Minister, his advisor and other functionaries acknowledged Bukhari's role. |
