Congress dissidents weaken party setup in J&K | | | If the National Conference leadership besides ministers, belonging to the party headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah, accord shabby treatment to the leaders belonging to the state unit of the Congress the fault lies in the Congress that continues to be plagued by the growing tussle between the loyalists, headed by the PCC Chief,Saif-ud-Din Soz,and the dissidnts, led by the Union Health Minister,Ghulam Nabi Azad. The congress leaders have started asserting themselves against what they call unfriendly attitude of the Chief Minister and his ministerial colleagues. If the Health Minister,Sham Lal Sharma's cry against continued discrimination of people of the Jammu region has encouraged the party dissidents to ask for his head it is the result pf lack of unity in the organisation. The dissidents felt emboldened for demanding that sharma be sacked from the ministry only after he was served with a show cause notice asking him to explain his remarks on Azadi for Kashmir, statehood status for Jammu and Union territory status for Ladakh.A large number of Congress leaders, including legislators and ministers, belonging to the Jammu region are fully annoyed and unhappy with the National Conference leadership, especially Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, and his political adviser.Omar and his adviser are being blamed by the Congress leaders for sidelining the party that has helped the National Conference to share power with it in Jammu and Kashmir. That the Congress leaders are unhappy with the functioning of the NC ministers is evident from the recent remarks made by the senior vicepresident of the state unit of the Congress,Muzaffar Parrey,in Srinagar. He did not conceal his anger against the Finance Minister,Abdul Rahim Rather, and the Law Minister,Ali Mohd.Sagar.Parrey said that the National Conference had failed to deliver the goods even while sharing power with the Congress.Hitting at the Omar led Government Parrey said that the Government headed by Mufti Mohd.Sayeed had ensured proper development of all the three regions. He praised the Mufti for his success for running a good show as the Chief Minister. In this connection Parrey appreciated the Mufti for taking the Congress leaders into confidence and added that he Mufti saw to it that the demands of the Congress leaders were conceded on a priority basis.Parrey said that against this NC Ministers do not bother even to meet Congress leaders and in support of his contention he stated that the Finance Minister,Abdul Rahim Rather, had avoided to meet him when he tried to contact him in connection with some work for the last six months. But the same Parrey did not spare some of the Congress ministers. It was not clearly known whether he belonged to the camp of dissidents or to the loyalists when he demanded immediate action against the Health Minister,Sham Lal Sharma for his remarks on Azadi for Kashmir. What sort of respect Parrey can expect from the NC ministers when he himself has been disrespectful to Congress leaders and Ministers.Parrey like other dissidents demanded action against Sharma without leaving the matter in the hands of the party high command. Why are dissidents in the Congress demanding action against Sham Lal Sharma for seeking statehood status for the Jammu region if Omar failed to remove indiscrimination of the region when they were silent over the remarks of Omar Abdullah questioning the finality of the state's accession with India ?If the Congress high command has been tolerating the extremists and separatists in the valley it is intriguing that some casual remarks of Sham Lal Sharma have forced the very high command to serve a show cause notice to him.By doing so the high command has strengthened the hands of the dissidents. It is the result of failure on the part of the high command that factionalism in the state unit of the Congress has surfaced with a bang.Had the Congress leaders been disciplined Parrey would have not criticised the Minister for Tourism,Jora, for not having participated in a function held to pay tributes to G.M.Sadiq,Mir Qasim and other senior party leaders in the PCC headquarters in Srinagar the other day.Parrey said that Jora had time to attend a cultural function in Jammu and had no time for presiding over a function organised by the Pradesh Congress Committee.Hence if the National Conference leaders take the Congress leaders, including the ministers, for a ride the blame for it rests on the shoulders of the Congress high command which has failed to resolve the problem of dissidence in the party in Jammu and Kashmir
