Traffic disarray irritates the inhabitants | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Vaibhavi Chandel JAMMU DEC 15: The malady of regular traffic jams and unregulated traffic flow has taken the toll of pedestarians in the busy city of Jammu, who are made to tread safely to reach their destinations. Despite tall claims of the traffic department and, of course, several initiatives taken in the recent months to combat this menace, the vehicle operators as also the general public keep braving with the difficultires on the traffic front. The situation has further worsened with the arrival of roughly 20,000 vehicles after the durbar move, biennial shifting of the state capital to this winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir. A matching number of vehicles throng from outside the state each day, according to the rough estimates. The traffic population in Jammu has already corssed 4.80 lakh mark. To man this huge number of vehicles, extra manpower is obviously required for the smooth regulation of the traffic. The extra contingent of traffic cops deployed at several vulnerable points notwithstanding, the disarray does not seem to be straightening up. Several reasons can be attributed to the traffic mess in the city, primary being the increased number of vehicles, lesser parking spaces and encroachments on various city roads. The increase in the vehicle population may be due to liberal financing by the banks and the puching capacity of the people. There are reportedly people who can afford even managing two to three cars of their own. And since past some time in Jammu, there has been no expansion of the roads or lanes that could have sustained the pressure effectively. Traffic jams have attained alarming proportions during the current marriage season in the city. Most of the banquet halls in the city are not having proper parking space so generally passing through these reception sites becomes just impossible as the cars are parked outside the halls in queues on the road side thereby making the vehicular flow impossible. The Akhnoor Road, one of the busiest road in the city, is one of the worst affected roads. Passing these roads becomes just to impossible in the marriage season. Though the authorities have passed strict instructions and even served notices to these banquet hall owners but they hardly are bothered about this. Even the court has issued directions on a petition, directeding these banquet halls to follow the restrictions and even the administration has been given directions about this but the banquet hall owners seem to be least bothered about all this. Not even the banquet hall owners have been defying the standing instructions, the administration too does not seem to be in a mood to impose the restrictions effectively. And, the sufferers are the general public. “Jammu faces the worst traffic scenario. The city is already congested and the random parking on the road side further enhances the problem. In the marriage season, especially the problem becomes more severe as most of the banquet halls do not have parking space”, rues Samriti Pathania, a resident of Shastri Nagar. “Already the city gives a very grimy scenario as far as traffic is concerned. There are many problems as far as traffic management is concerned. Lack of parking space is the utmost problem city is facing and surely the traffic managers have to think over it”, says Ritesh Janjua, a resident of Canal Road. ‘People have to struggle hard to reach their destinations. At times if you are supposed to attend some marriage ceremony, you have to park your vehicle atleast half a kilometer before the banquet hall and have to pave the rest of the way on foot as the random parking makes it impossible to drive. Even as there is very less parking space in the banquet halls so people generally have to park their cars on road and this gives rise to traffic jams”, says Anurudh Bakshi, a resident of Rehari. AS per S C Sawney, Municipal Commissioner,“ We will surely find out some way to make the banquet hall owners realize of this. We will make them to follow the instructions strictly.
