All India Inter-University Fencing Championship | JU wins silver in men’s Foil event | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 15: Gold winner last time, the men’s Foil team of host University of Jammu (JU) could make it silver this time losing to BR Ambedkar Marathawada University Aurangabad in final in the ongoing All India Inter-University Fencing Championship at Gymnasium Hall of JU, here today. The JU fencers could not play on expected lines and gave away the match with final score on board reading 15-08 in favour of Marathawada University. All the four players, Varun Slathia, Ankush Gupta, Ujjwal Gupta and Nakul played a game of three minutes each but could not match the opponent higher score. The Marathawada University was represented by Sanchin Borde, Ajinkya Dudhare, Tukaram Mehta and Parshant Shasidhar. Third place in men’s Foil event was shared by Manipur University and Punjab University Chandigarh. Earlier, in the hardliner, Manipur University (K Amarjeet Singh, P Jugalchandra, S Roshan and Ch Karanjeet) defeated Punjab University (Pankaj Singla, Varender Singh, Saravpreet and Sunit). Meanwhile, Punjabi University Pataila bagged women’s Epee team event gold outplaying Kannur University Kannur in the well contested final. Third place in this event went to Anna University Tirachanapalli, who beat Avinashalingam University, Coimbatore in hardliner to finish joint third. On the second day of the three-day championship, Sylvia A Sahni, wife of Vice-Chancellor, JU, Prof Varun Sahni was chief guest, who gave away medals to the winners of two teams events of men’s Foil and Epee. Commissioner Secretary, Irrigation and Flood Control, Ashok Angurana was guest of honour while Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau presided.
