NRHM TO PROVIDE EFFECTIVE HEALTHCARE
TO RURAL POPULATION IN THE COUNTRY

JAMMU, July 28, 2006.





The National Rural Health Misssion (NRHM), launched on 12th April 2005, seeks to provide effective healthcare to rural population throughout the country with special focus on 18 States which have weak health indicators and weak infrastructure. Jammu and Kashmir State has been included as one of these States under the Mission.





The NRHM aims to provide overarching umbrella to the existing programmes of Health and Family Welfare including Reproductive Child Health (RCH)-II, Malaria, Blindness, Iodine deficiency, Filaria, Kala Azar, T.B., Leprosy and Integrated Disease Surveillance.. The Mission further aims at undertaking architectural correction of the health system to enable it to effectively handle increased allocations as promised under the National Common Minimum Programme and promote policies that strengthen public health management and service delivery in the country.





The goals of the Mission are: Reduction in infant mortality rate and maternal mortality radio, universal access to public health services such as women’s health, child health, water, sanitation and hygiene, immunization and nutrition; prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases; population stabilization, gender and demographic balance; access to integrated comprehensive primary health care and promotion of healthy life styles.





ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) will be the first port of call for any health-related demands of deprived sections of the population, especially women and children, who find it difficult to access health services. She will be a health activist in the community who will create awareness on health and mobilize the community towards local health planning and increased utilization and accountability of the existing health services. As on 16th March, 2006 the number of ASHAs selected is 1,21,444 and the number of ASHAs trained during last one year is 15,798.
