Coordination Committee meeting today | Schedule for Panchayat polls likely to get final shape | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 15: The much delayed Coordination Committee meeting is finally being held tomorrow afternoon in the winter capital of the state under the chairmanship of J&KPCC chief and senior Congress leader Prof Saif-u-Din Soz. In the meeting both pattern and schedule of the Panchayat elections is likely to be given final shape by the ruling allies. The meeting of the two coalition partners under this panel meant for ensuring smooth ties, is being held after over five months.
Sources said that while there a host of important issues to be discussed by the senior leaders of both NC and Congress in this meeting but the focus of the discussion will be on the Panhayat elections for which schedule will be finalised. More importantly, both the alliance partners will formally approve the decision of holding the polls on non party basis though this has been agreed in principle by them when the government announced it has made up mind to hold the elections early next year. Sources said the members of the coordination panel , who are veterans in terms of experience and seniority in politics will also discuss the modalities for the elections and see to it whether contesting the polls on non party basis would accrue them benefits in political terms. “Many things are to be discussed threadbare and it has to be seen that interests of all are safeguarded……..unanimity on certain key matters is must which will be discussed threadbare tomorrow” said a senior member of the panel.
Sources said though NC has been saying rather it has given its nod for holding the elections early this year, Congress will formally give its consent in the meeting tomorrow. Most likely the poll process will be set in motion in January next year which will followed by polls in March. The panel most likely will finalize schedule in tomorrow’s meeting, said the sources.
The last meeting of the Coordination Committee was held in July this year in which a host of issues related to smooth running of the coalition government were discussed particularly in the backdrop of turbulent situation in Kashmir Valley at that time. Though the meeting was convened two weeks back but it was again postponed which both NC as well as Congress attributed to pre occupation of their leaders who are the members of the panel. . The members of the Coordination panel would discuss and decide how both partners would go about while contesting the polls on non party basis, sources said adding though there are few more issues that needed to be taken up to clear them with unanimity. In the backdrop of some bitterness that crept in with recent statements of Health Minister Sham Lal sharma and also the statements given by NC leader and MLA Dr Mustafa Kamal over which PCC chief expressed reservations, the Coordination panel will discuss these matters with an intention that such statements only prove damaging for the ties between the allies. “The members will try to prevail upon the leadership at various levels to avoid giving such statements which do not augur well for smooth running of the coalition…..this is required also to stop sending any wrong messages that all is not well with the coalition partners”, said the member of the panel.
The meeting will try to ward off the impression which may fuel speculations of friction or differences between the two alliance partners, sources said. While Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah is the member of the Coordination panel, he may not be able to attend the meeting tomorrow due to some pre occupations. However, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Finance Minister AR Rather and Rural Development Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar will attend the meeting from NC , while as Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, PCc chief Prof Soz and former Deputy CM Pandit Mangat Ram Sharma will attend the meeting in capacity of Congress members.
