Doctors pick begging bowls as mark of protest | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Mishu Gupta Jammu, Dec 15: In a role reversal of the protest format, the agitating physiotherapists today took to streets and bazaars carrying bowls in their hands and asking for ‘alms’. “This is the only way now left with us to secure our livelihood which otherwise is being denied to us by the government,” said Dr Vimal adding, “We are forced to beg”. The JKPA adopted a unique way to protest the anti-public & anti –social policies of state Govt. in reactions to statements of Ministers of State that nothing can be done due to non-availability of funds. Nearly 50 physiotherapists who were agitating for the last one month, today indulged into 'begging' in Hari Market area. Carrying utensils, the physiotherapists this afternoon assembled at Hari Market area and 'begged' from the passersby. Earlier the whole strength of physiotherapy doctors gathered in the front of old. Div. Comm., Mubark Mandi. As soon as the strength gathered, anti-Govt. slogan & speeches in favour of demands of JKPA started pouring. Physiotherapy doctors later started begging on roads with begging bowls in hands and wearing aprons. They started begging from Mubarik mandi, proceeded towards Pacca Danga, Sabji Mandi, Purani Mandi ,City Chowk, Shri Raghunathji market to Mandir Paurian. At Bus stand they sat for one hour, begged there for government revenue and then dispersed peacefully towards their dharna site at Mubark Mandi. During the whole time of begging, the physiotherapy doctors apprised the general public of their problems & genuine demands. They also made the general public aware of the need of physiotherapists in the state and laid the onus on the inactiveness of the Government. They said that since the protest has entered the 24th consecutive day, but it is unfortunate that no government representative even bothered to listen to them. They also distributed pamphlets among the people to aware them of their ongoing agitation and policies of the state government. Later they assembled outside Press Club to take out a mass rally but due to heavy deployment of police, the rally was foiled. ''The struggle will continue unless our demands are met,'' doctors said. The doctors claimed that they will continue the protests in one way or another and simultaneously mass awareness program would also be held till their demands are not met by the State Govt. They added that the collected money amounting to 1003 INR will be submitted to the Minister for Health Sham Lal so that they can survive in the paucity of funds, the doctors mocked.
