All India Inter-University Fencing Championship concludes | Ujjwal’s double gold helps JU retain overall trophy | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 16: SAF Games gold medalist and top fencer of the state, Ujjwal Gupta today powered host University of Jammu (JU) to retain men’s overall championship trophy in the All India Inter-University (men and women) Fencing Championships held at Gymnasium Hall of the JU, here. Ujjwal first led his Saber team to gold win playing brilliant game in the third deciding bout thereby making it 15-10 on scoreboard. Down in the first bout played by Rajay Kumar 4-5, JU went up when Ajay Kumar took one point lead 10-9 playing the second bout. However, Ujjwal added five points as against just one by the opponent to clinch the gold. Later, he also won individual gold in Sabre to guide JU to overall championship trophy win. Besides making clean sweep in men’s Sabre event, JU also won silver in Foil and bronze in Epee thus giving an improved performance this time in team events. In individual events, JU also won silver when Varun Slathia lost a close final in Epee to his opponent from Punjabi University Patiala. Earlier, the saber team gold win by JU charged the atmosphere at the crowded Gymnasium Hall with Vice-Chancellor, Prof Varun Sahni himself cheering for every point earned by JU in nine-minute final played by three fencers. The total involvement on part of the Vice Chancellor of the host university was something laudable in sports. Meanwhile, the paucity of time, only three days to conduct six events that too involving 29 universities of the country, kept the technical staff on toes. It also resulted in the chief guest, Minister for Sports, R S Chib and guest of honour, Member Parliament, Madan Lal Sharma remained there at the venue for three long hours. “The three-day time was not adequate to complete such a big event. Despite three fists (playing arena) used by the technical people, the schedule remained hectic throughout,” joint secretary of the J&K Fencing Association, Rajeev Sharma told SAN. “Undoubtedly, it was a successful event. The well managed competition hardly witnessed any protest from the competitors in judgment as also in hospitality of the host JU,” State Sports Council fencing coach and international official, Shotu Lal opined when approached by Our correspondant.
