Power crisis looms large over J&K
Water level drops, hydel power likely to dip
12/16/2010 9:55:51 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 16: Following marked drop in the water level in two major rivers-Jehlum and Chenab-generation of electricity from several hydel projects has come down to 40 percent of the installed capacity.
Official sources said that the generation may further fall with added drop in the water level in the near future. As a result of growing power shortage the authorities have been forced to resort to seven to nine-hour power cut in the rural areas and four to five hour cut in the urban belts, except for certain sensitive areas.
Official sources said that the crisis has been aggravated because of wide gap between the demand and availability of electricity. According to the PDD circles against the demand of 2500 MWs, Department has been able to supply 1500 MWs per day. They said that the gap of 1000 MWs was a big one.
However, as per its entitlement the state has started drawing additional power of 300 MWs from the Northern Regional Power Committee for reducing the gap between the demand and the supply. PDD circles admitted that neither the state nor the central Government has increased their investment on setting up major hydel power projects in Jammu and Kashmir.
They said that the limitations imposed by the Indus Water Treaty on the use of water of Jehlum, Chenab and Indus for power generation too had added to the woes of the people. The circles also agreed that the mess in the power sector had been augmented by the meager sums of money the state Government earmarked for maintenance and generation and very high rate of power pilferage and leakage.
They said there were sever al thousand power consumers who had unauthorized power connections. In addition to this, poor tariff collections has increased cash crunch in the PDD. Police circles say that if there is growing peoples' resentment against any issue it is against acute power shortage and that in the winter months when people in Kashmir need it the most
