J&K traffic cops facing dearth of anti-pollution masks
12/16/2010 11:17:25 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 16: With substantial increase in number of registered vehicles in Jammu and its adjoining areas, level of air pollution is acquiring threatening proportions.
Lack of green cover on almost all busy roads, blatant violation of traffic rules and absence of 'pollution free' certificate is taking heavy toll on the general health of the traffic police cops and adding to their miseries. Their headquarter has also left them in lurch minus anti-pollution masks to minimize adverse impact of pollution.
A random survey conducted across major rotaries across the city is sufficient to expose the tall claims often made by the traffic police department that they are doing everything possible within their means and measures to look after needs of vulnerable traffic police cops. None of the traffic police cop on duty was seen wearing anti-pollution masks as none possessed them.
"We were given these masks for protection from growing pollution levels but it is a old story. Once these masks were in bad shape we were left with no other option but to throw them away. We were never given same masks by the department to minimise adverse effect of pollution on our health,” said a cop.
According to rough estimates, majority of traffic police cops are suffering from respiratory disorders and often visit consultants in government hospital and police line for check up and medical advice. Some of the cops can be seen wearing handkerchiefs in double on their faces to take care of the worsening level of air pollution.
During their interaction with the correspondent the traffic police cops said, they feel helpless when they fail to discipline violators every day.
"When these polluted and unfit vehicles pass through us we are left with no choice but to to bear the maximum brunt of air and noise pollution. In number of cases cops try and issue chalan to these defaulters but there number is so huge that it is physically not possible for them to caught hold of each and every vehicle and issue a chalan for violating the norms.
In the absence of adequate number of traffic cops, majority of jawans on duty across Jammu feel that the head office should arrange masks for them on regular basis and arrange regular health checkup for them to avoid any health disorders.
