Of interlocutors and detained militants | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 16: It seems, New Delhi’s nominated interlocutors have abandoned the idea of discussing the `peace plan’ framed by the detained militants in Srinagar Central Jail. The plan had fascinated the interlocutors during their first visit to the Valley. The optimism of the interlocutors had evoked a `humorous’ reaction in the Valley. Kashmir has drastically changed during the past few years. The Hizbul Mujahedeen supreme commander, Syed Salah-u-Din’s effigy was torched in Srinagar when he issued a statement on the agitation. He had to issue a statement to explain his position. Similarly slogans were chanted against Syed Ali Geelani as well. If these two persons are taken to task by the people, what can the detained militants do? But then the interlocutors have their own limitations especially when they are operating without terms of reference. However, this does not mean that the interlocutors must not listen to the detained or former militants. They too have problems to be addressed. According to a renowned psychiatrist, detained militants are always in high spirits. But once they come out, most of them find it very difficult to `make their presence felt’. Mostly the bread and butter issues worry them. For the information of the interlocutors, the former militants are supposed to ensure their presence in army camps and police stations twice a week. They cannot leave their native places without informing the authorities. Slowly but surely the harsh realities of life start dawning on them. They find themselves in a state of despondency and helplessness. The interlocutors have to understand the psyche of the detained militants. Inside the jail they apply their mind and work out plans for taking the `struggle to its logical end’. Not only in Srinagar central jail, the detainees in other jails of the state have big plans and want to discuss them as well. A visit to various jails in Jammu will be a rewarding experience for the interlocutors. Talking to detainees will clear many a doubt of the interlocutors and in the process they will understand that the detained militants have no magic lamp.
