| Government to crack down on Land Mafia: Azad | | | JAMMU, Nov 6: Finally calling the shots, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi today announced a crackdown on land mafia saying, “13 lakh kanals of government land was encroached upon by the land mafia in the state but that would be retrieved within six months from now.” Addressing media persons after Durbar Move offices reopened here this morning, Azad said, “Though land mafia has spread its tentacles everywhere in the state but the menace is more in Jammu district in general and Jammu tehsil in particular.” “Around 13 lakh kanals of government land was encroached by the land mafia, obviously in connivance with administrative officials but we have prepared an inventory of such land under illegal occupation and action would soon follow”, added Azad. He said, “Within six months from now the 13 lakh kanals of land under illegal occupation would be freed from the clutches of mafia.” He, however, also hinted at a Roshini like scheme to generate revenue where eviction was not possible. Lashing out at land mafia, the Chief Minister said, “Goons, who have been indulging into the malpractice and at the same time enjoying political backing would not be spared.” He said, “Pretending themselves as white-collared persons, these goons either have found safe haven in political parties or have forayed into fourth estate. But, I would like to keep it straight that nobody, whosoever he is, would be spared.” “In my opinion there is no difference between land mafia of Jammu and militants, rather former is more dangerous than militants because latter only kill people but the former also guzzles government property”, he added. He said, “Records of such elements enjoying political background or have found way into fourth estate will also be scrutinized and if anything objectionable was found then government would not hesitate to initiate action under law.” “Though I don’t want media to be rubber stamp of the government but sheep in the guise of wolf involved in the land grabbing incidents would not be spared”, he averred. Azad said, “The menace of land grabbing was growing in the state from the last 17 years but now it has gained dangerous proportions, particularly in Jammu district including Jammu tehsil.” |
