Kashmir, Ladakh in grip of cold wave, parts of Dal Lake, taps freeze

Srinagar, Dec 17 : With temperature dipping further, the cold wave has gripped the entire state,its impact being felt intensely in Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region. Parts of world famous Dal Lake were again frozen near banks as cold wave conditions intensified after the minimum temperature dropped further.
While the cold wave continues to affect normal life in entires Kashmir Valley, the higher reaches are experiencing more hardships and its intensity .World famous Gulmarg was coldest in the Kashmir valley with minus 5.5 degree while people in Ladakh region continued to shiver with minimum recorded between minus 9 to minus 25 degree.
Life in the summer capital Srinagar remained affected due to cold coupled with frequent power failure.In some areas people also found their taps frozen on account of which water supply remained affected for some time.
Parts of the world famous Dal Lake, one of the major tourist attraction in the city, were again frozen this morning after the minimum dipped to minus 4.6 degree against yesterday's minus 3.3 degree.Apart from Dal Lake, in many areas nullahs and ponds have also frozen due to cold wave conditions.
A weather office spokesman said the cold wave conditions will continue for couple of days more in the absence of Western Disturbances (WD), originating from Arabian sea and entering the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He said the WD entering the region are not so strong to cause snowfall or rains which could bring improvement in the temperature.
The ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir was coldest with minus 5.5 degree minimum against yesterday's minus 3.5 degree. Health resort Pahalgam, base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas recorded minus 5 degree this morning against yesterday's minus 3.6 degree.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir recorded minus 4.8 degree against yesterday's minus 3.6 degree.
People in Ladakh region also continued to face extreme cold because of freezing temperature.While Leh registered minus 12 degree and shia dominated Kargil experienced minus 9 degree minimum temperature.
