12/18/2010 12:20:02 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Dec 17: With the manhandling of Dainik Jagran lens man by the police today, the attacks on the fourth estate by the men in uniform this year have gone up to fifteen. This does not include issue of notices by the Speaker Legislative Assembly to various editors and police action against four Jammu based newspapers.
Surprisingly the senior officers of the police and civil administration have apologized and assured action after every attack. But to this day, no erring police man has been brought to justice. Neither the Chief Minister nor the Director General of Police (DGP) seem interested in saving the fourth estate from the onslaught of the men in uniform.
According to reports, Dainik Jagran lens man, Shafat Sidiqui was performing his professional duties in Jehangir Chowk area this morning. The area was under curfew to prevent Zuljinnah procession which the Shia sect takes out on Muharram 10.
Reports said a police man assaulted Sidiqui by his lathi causing injuries in his head. The fellow scribes, reports said, rushed to his rescue. Meanwhile, the police man managed escape from the area.
The scribes registered protest. A senior police office rushed to the spot and apologized for the unruly behavior of the erring police man. He also assured strict action against him.
The scribes have been at the receiving end since January this year. The scribes were humiliated, manhandled and prevented from discharging their professional duties time and again during especially during the five-month agitation starting June 11.
With today's assault, the number of attacks on scribes this year has gone up to 15. This includes seizure of newspapers by the police on four occasions. The newspaper owners suspended publication in protest but to no avail.
On October 1, the Chief Minister ordered investigation into seizure of newspapers by the police. The investigation was supposed to be completed in 24 hours. However, till date the report has not been submitted.
