12/18/2010 9:06:21 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 18: After the affiliated unit, Dogra Law College, expressed its `inability’ to host the annual inter-college chess tournament, the University of Jammu (JU) has decided to conduct the event on the campus from January 17.
Otherwise scheduled to be held from December 13 at Dogra Law College, the five-day long competition in men and women sections shall now take place at Gymnasium Hall of the JU next month.
As part of efforts made by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education to involve JU’s affiliated units in hosting the annual inter-college competitions, the chess event was allotted to Dogra Law College. In this regard a couple of meetings were also held between the concerned officers and management of the College.
“It is true that the event has been re-scheduled for January 17 at Gymnasium Hall of the University. In fact, due to certain reasons, the Dogra Law College could not hold the event from scheduled date of December 13,” Assistant Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Education, Ramesh Magotra told SAN.
Meanwhile, 22 colleges have confirmed their entries in men’s section for this knock-out event. In women category, there are 16 colleges taking part in this event.
Both men and women titles have been won by Government SPMR College of Commerce in the last edition of the competitions. While in men section, Commerce College beat Government Degree College Udhampur, in women final, they (Commerce) outplayed Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar.
