EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Dec 18 : The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg in the Kashmir valley and Kargil in Ladakh region were the coldest as there was still no respite from the dry weather, resulting in increase in the cold related diseases.Even as people have staying indoors, the normal life has been affected badly due to cold wave conditions adding to their misreies at these places.
A weather office spokesman said cold wave conditions will intensify further because of dry weather during the night in the absence of Western Disturbances (WD).
We are not getting strong WD which could have resulted in snowfall and rains besides improvement in the weather, he said.
The WD, originating in the Arabian sea and arriving in the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, are very weak.
He said Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest in the valley after the mercury dipped to minus 6.1 degrees during the night against yesterdays minus 5.5 degrees.
Health resort of Pahalam recorded minus 5.4 degrees against yesterday's minus 5 degrees minimum temperature.
The water level in river Lidder had further dropped as the snow on upper reaches had been frozen.
The summer capital, Srinagar, recorded minus 3.8 degrees, recording a slight improvement against yesterday when the minimum was minus 4.6 degrees. The clod wave conditions have also affected the attendance in the schools which were decided to be kept open in view of loss of academic season this year due to unrest for over three months. "We cannot send our children to school for fear of falling sick.....there is every chance getting cold related diseases if they remain out for the day", said a parent of Rajbagh.
Cold wave conditions have also badly affected the normal activities in rural areas where folks prefer to stay indoors even during the day time.At Kupwara in north Kashmir the minimum was minus 4.8 degrees while it was minus 4.2 degrees at Qazigund in south Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
In cold desert Ladakh, the conditions are even worse. There was also some improvement in the minimum temperature in Leh where it was recorded minus 8.2 degrees this morning against yesterdays minus 12 degrees.
In the border town of Kargil it was minus 9.2 degrees, making the people face hardships on many counts.
However, the temperature was between minus 15 to minus 25 degrees in the upper reaches.
