Mir for increasing investment in agriculture sector in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec19: The state Government is highly concerned over meagre investment in the sector of agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir. Stating this the Minister for Agriculture G.H.Mir, said that he would organise a seminar on the matter where experts would be asked to give their opinion so that on the basis of their recommendations a comprehensive plan is formulated. Mir stated that as a result of poor investment in the agriculture sector the state had to bank on heavy import of foodgrains. He said that those who own land dare not give it on lease to the cultivators because of the fear of loss of ownership. He said when compared to Haryana and Punjab the investment ratio in the sector of agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir is quite poor. This has to be changed so that "we are nearer to Punjab and Haryana as far as investment in sect or of agriculture was concerned." The Minister said that the Government would explore the possibility of framing new rules so that ownership rights were protected. Once the land is used for agricultural practices the state could become self-sufficient. In reply to a question Mir said that another matter of concern was increase in the rate of use of agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes. He said the Government was exploring to enact a law under which use of agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes was strictly prohibited. He said there were vast chunks of land that had been utilized either for raising residential colonies or for other practices. This has to be stopped when over the years the area under agriculture had been reduced.
