| Need for comprehensive renewable energy policy: Kalam | | | New Delhi, Nov 06: President A P J Abdul Kalam on Monday underlined the need for a comprehensive renewable energy policy with mandatory and time-bound provisions to tap the potential of wind and solar power optimally.
"We need to review our policies towards renewable energy in general and wind power, solar power and bio-fuels in particular," he said at the world wind energy conference here.
Kalam said power ministry's directive to state electricity regulatory commissions to fix a minimum percentage for purchase of energy from renewable energy sources should be made applicable throughout the country.
"This is a must if we have to go ahead," he said.
By 2030, India would need 4,00,000 mw of electric power against the present 1,30,000 mw. For achieving energy independence by 2030, the country must aim for deriving at least 25 per cent of the total need from renewable energy sources, he said.
Kalam suggested that for generating at least 64,000 mw of power from wind energy by 2030, studies must be launched to explore other potential areas such as off-shore wind farms since India has over 7,000 km long coastline.
The generation cost from wind energy projects needed to be reduced to Rs 1-2 per unit from up to 3.5 per unit at present, he said, adding wind turbine power plants must be standardised to achieve economies of scale and cut costs.
Among other things, he suggested setting up autonomous wind generating units in islands and remote areas, undertaking feasibility study for determining economic sizes of wind energy plants and introducing wind energy as an M. Tech programme in engineering institutions.
