Pesticide food contamination can induce protection: SKIMS | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Dec 20: In a recent seminar Department of Cl. Pharmacology SKIMS presented a study conducted on “Pesticide Food Contamination can induce Protection” in the auditorium. It was revealed that high levels of a protective enzyme (cholinesterase) has been found for the first time existing normally in the blood circulation of normal healthy adult population of Kashmir valley as a result of an investigation conducted in the department of clinical pharmacology Sheri-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar, on a population cohort. Pesticide consumption has been increasing since past many years leading to exposure through food chain of even the population that is not otherwise engaged in agricultural activities in Kashmir. Increased enzyme activity in our population may be due to rebound phenomenon in cholinesterase synthesis due to chronic pesticides exposure. The increased cholinesterase may be acting as a defence mechanism against inevitable and unintended pesticide exposure and may be a natural protective mechanism against sub-toxic quantities to which people of Kashmir are exposed. The study conducted under the supervision of Prof. Z. A. Wafai, HOD Cl. Pharmacology.
