EARLY TIMES REPORT
KATRA, Dec 20: Angered by the alleged traffic police harassment, students of Reasi degree college today smashed the car of a sector officer (SO) and held a demonstration at Baradari Chowk, blocking it to vehicular traffic.
The trouble started at about 8.30 am when traffic police cops signalled a minibus (JK02Q/1547) to stop for checking at Baradari Chowk. The minibus, which was on its way from Talwara to Reasi, had ajority college students in it.
Official sources said over some issue, there were heated exchanges between the minibus driver and traffic police cops which irritated the students.
The students, including girls, then alighted from the minibus and raised slogans against traffic police, alleging that they had been harassing the minibus operators for no fault of theirs. Joined by more college students, they squatted in the middle of the
Baradari Chowk and blocked it to vehicular traffic amidst raising of anti-traffic police slogans.
Additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Avtar Singh, tehsildar Kunal Sharma and Reasi police station SHO then arrived at the spot and tried to pacify them. The students, who refused to lift dharna, then marched towards the deputy commissioner's office in the town. However, when they were not allowed to meet the DC, they got more agitated. In the form of a procession, they again returned to Baradari Chowk where they smashed
the Maruti car (JK02N/3015) of SO, Sub-Inspector Ajay Singh. Sources said they also allegedly had a scuffle with the traffic police cops at the chowk.
The protest continued up to 2 pm when the students dispersed peacefully following an assurance by SDPO, DSP Mohammad Rashid that action under law would be taken against the traffic police cops if they were found guilty. The SO later lodged a complaint with Reasi police station against the students for smashing his car. The vehicular traffic remained disrupted in Reasi town from 8.30 am to 2 pm.
