Despite odds ET is on top of net | Tum teer aazmao hum jigar aazmayain | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 19: Nothing is impossible. As far as Early Times (ET) is concerned the adage proved true since the paper has achieved a rare feat of receiving maximum responses (hits) on the internet among all the Jammu based ‘giant’ newspapers including English and Hindi dailies. It is indeed an achievement for Early Times, which started its journey only nine years back. According to Alexa (www.alexa.com), an Internet service that measures how many Internet users visit a website, the Early Times’ website is the most visited site among the local newspapers of the state. At Alexa.com, people can enter a website address and Alexa will show them how well-visited the website is. Amazingly even Editor, Early Times, Mr Munish Gupta’s age is less than some of the popular and established English as well as other vernacular dailies being published from Jammu. Though the Early Times is growing by leaps and bounds since its inception in 2001, probably it is the only newspaper in the state which has faced continuous official wrath on one occasion or the other. The official machinery always try to target the newspaper particularly its owner, publisher and Editor Mr Munish Gupta, almost certainly for the bold, fair, fearless and honest journalism being pursued by the Early Times. False and frivolous cases had been imposed on the Editor, the newspaper was seized and what not, the government used every trick to suppress the voice of Early Times, which keeps on trying to represent the hopes and aspirations of all sections of the society with in-depth news analysis and truthful reporting. Despite state government’s constant harassment of Early Times, the paper without any fear or favour goes on presenting the real picture to its readers. The Editor was even threatened by a top politician, who said, “Stop writing against government otherwise trouble is waiting for you…. You better keep this in mind that government is all powerful, it can go to any extent.” When the Early Times newspaper was seized for publishing a news item on alleged burning of temple in Kashmir valley, more than sixty police personnel had come to ET office to ‘put in place’ the official dictum. The police before entering the office chamber of the Editor harassed the staff members including computer operators and peons. One of the peons informed Mr Munish that policemen are also resorting to their frisking. Police minutely checked everything from computers to the pockets of ET employees. The police even took the finger prints of Editor Mr Munish Gupta but nobody else including the ET reporter who filed the ‘objectionable’ news item and people from other newspapers, which were also sealed, have not been called to undergo the same exercise till date. “As soon as I came to know that police is wildly looking out for literally everything kept in the office I thought that they might be doing this to plant a fake evidence against me in the form of contraband, explosive or something else,” Editor Munish Gupta said. “The police came like as if they have to arrest the most wanted terrorist Salahuddin.” he added Police even raided the house of Mr Munish and there also they harassed children, searched almirahs and did not even spare the water tanks. It was not only the management which was under constant pressure and being intimidated by the different government agencies, the staff members of ET were also apprehending that they might be charged with some offence in those four-five days when paper’s publication was stopped by an order of the district administration. Despite all these hurdles and administrative suppression, the Early Times has managed to create a niche for itself only because of the regular support and good wishes of its readers and well wishers. In the years to come, we hope that the people of the state keep on endorsing us as they have done so far. Achieving number one rank on internet among all the Jammu based dailies is just a beginning of attaining newer heights by the Early Times. The Alexa India ranking for the Websites are given below. Less the Rank, higher is the user penetration of the website. Site Name Alexa India Rank 1. www.earlytimes.in 15,471 2. www.dailyexcelsior.com 17,311 3. www.kashmirtimes.com 22,212 4. www.thenorthlines.com 44,690 Other media organizations figuring on national level include The Times of India, with a Rank of 249, Hindustan Times has ranking of 131 and NDTV is having rank of 47.
