BJP firm on JPC in 2G spectrum Scam; to block Budget session | | | AGENCY New Delhi, Dec 23 : Even as the Congress offered a special session of Parliament to discuss the Opposition demand for a JPC to probe the 2G spectrum allocation scam, BJP President Nitin Gadkari asserted that the party would not fall into the trap and would not dilute its stand even by an iota. Asserting that "loot" of the national exchequer could not be brushed under the carpet, Mr Gadkari asked,"What is the meaning of democracy if the Prime Minister could not assert his authority and try to shield those who mend rules to amass huge wealth by a scam to the tune of Rs 1.76 lakh crore in the radio waves allocation?" A furious Gadkari, bracing up to hit streets across the country to press the demand for a JPC probe into the issue, ridiculed Congress for trying to divert people's attention from the core issue of corruption by seeking to highlight communalism, terror and casteism as and when scams come to the focus. The BJP president said the party's forthcoming national executive meet in Guwahati, Assam, would deliberate at length on the corruption issue and the party's strategy to expose Congress designs for the cover ups on the humongous scams. To ensure transparency in the governance in the BJP-ruled states, the party would soon direct the states that all land allocations, licenses for extractions of major minerals like coal, iron ore, oil, copper ore would have to be through e-tendering and public auctions. If that was accomplished, ninety per cent of the problems would be taken care of, Mr Gadkari said, adding the e-tendering would be made compulsory even for the land acquisitions. Extra care would be taken that land owners were adequately compensated, rehabilitated and they were given employment and equity too in the projects coming up in their lands, he said. Finance Minister and senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee, speaking at a function here last night, had said the ruling Congress was not averse to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the JPC demand on floor of the house if opposition parties agreed to that. Soon after this offer, Gadkari said it was not feasible as the JPC demand was the key issue and there was no scope for its dilution under the pretext of special session. The BJP President, ,said the opposition would not hesitate to logjam the Budget session too over the JPC demand as colossal funds had been siphoned away quietly, and a JPC probe alone could track down culprits "whose roots have been tracked outside India too". He made light of the Congress announcement that it would take the corruption issue head on and said it is nothing but ''sounds like Chor machaiye shor" (thieves raise hue and cry).
