Slaughter house at Jagti a reality now, work to start soon | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 23: The long pending construction of modern slaughter house in Jammu seems to be in sight now as the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has finally selected land at Jagti to give region the first modern slaughter house. To be build at the cost of Rs 20 crore, Central Government has released released Rs 1.53 crore while another Rs 1.50 crore has been released by the state government for the first phase. The shifting of primitive slaughterhouses from the residential areas to the outskirts of the city has faced years of delays. The project was first taken up about 30 years back, but due to lack of funds it saw a long delay. At present the slaughter houses run from residential localities of Dogra hall and Gujjar Nagar. The two slaughterhouses, constructed in 1947 in these two residential colonies, are source of inconvenience for residents of these colonies. “50 kanals of land has been identified and possession from the forest department has been taken by the corporation by paying Rs 40 lakh and work will start in another two months”, an official said. “We have acquired 75 kanals of land in Jagti, it takes about a year to complete the project as the department has to take Detailed Project Report (DPR) tender and only after that the work would be start..….When the project will be completed, it will end the inconvenience of the people living in the area. It will be taken up on priority basis by the corporation”, he added. Even the residents are feeling happy and said that it should be completed immediately. Raj Kumar, a resident of Dogra Hall, said, “During summer, foul smell coming out from the slaughterhouse spreads everywhere, thus making the life miserable for us. It should be shifted immediately”. Expressing annoyance, Manzoor Shafi, a shopkeeper at Gujjar Nagar, said slaughterhouse had become nuisance for residents of the area, adding that no one could pass through the road without holding breath. The residents alleged that stinking water along with waste drained out of the slaughterhouse blocks the main drain at regular intervals. Mohammad Shafi, a dabha owner, whose dabha is situated few steppes away from the slaughterhouse said, “Due to its presence I suffered a slump in my business as customers do not prefer to consume food in my daba”.
