UPA soft on autonomy, self rule demands | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 23: The Union Government is likely to concede either the demand of greater autonomy of National Conference or self rule as proposed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Jammu and Kashmir state. The inferences to it can be drawn from the statements of the interlocutors on Kashmir made by them from time to time. Though the people of Jammu region including the Muslims from Rajouri, Poonch and Doda districts have outrightly rejected the autonomy as well as self rule and stressed on ending the regional discrimination to which the Jammu region has been subjected for years together the high placed sources said that the Government will either concede the demand of greater autonomy of NC or self rule by PDP to sideline the secessionist and pro Pak elements in the Valley. However with the growing resentment in Jammu region against the Government policies whom they blame has a soft corner for the Valley people who have been demanding the merger with Pakistan or Azadi, the Union Government as well as the interlocutors are in a fix how to go ahead with the move. The brewing resentment in Jammu region has forced the interlocutors to change their stance saying that the people in the region neither are for autonomy nor for self rule but want that their day today problems be settled. The worries for the Government have also increased after the BJP decided to hold a massive rally in Jammu to give a befitting reply to the forces challenging the merger of the state with rest of India, sources added. Sources said the BJP's stand on Kashmir at a time when the Union Government has also sent feelers through interlocutors to have dialogue with people in the sate on the issue of autonomy and self rule has perturbed the UPA as well as coalition Government in the state. Sources said repeating its role played by the Party during the 1953 Praja Parishad movement when the president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Dr Sharma Prashad Mookerjee laid down his life in Kashmir after breaking the permit system, BJP has guard up its lines to throttle the UPA Government move that will weaken the bonds of the state with rest of country. Sources said the BJP has made it clear that it will not allow the Government to take any such decision on Kashmir that will be inimical to national interests and the Party is ready to give any sacrifice in this regard. BJP leadership in unequivocal terms has made it clear to UPA Government at Centre as well as coalition Government in the state that Party is totally against the demands of self rule, autonomy, porous border etc and it is for dealing with the problem created by Pakistan firmly. However the BJP has assured its full support to the Government in case it involves the people to settle the issue under the frame work of Indian Constitution, sources added. The BJP, while taking serious exception to the statements of UPA leaders including its chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister, P Chidambaram over Kashmir said that by supporting the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who created a controversy over the merger of the state with rest of the country, indicates that Congress does not consider J&K as an integral part of India. The BJP's stand has received also support from various Kashmiri Pandit organizations including Panun Kashmir led by Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo, JKVM and ASKPC. They said that the Party rally will definitely give a moral boost to the nationalist forces in the state and send a categorical signal to the forces inimical to national interests that the autonomy and self rule will not be tolerated by them. |
