12/24/2010 9:48:52 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 24: J&K unit of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today lambasted the union government for blind adoption of neo-liberal economic policies, observing that the fallout of these measures have played havoc with the life of common man throughout the country.
Addressing one day ‘Workers Convention’, organized by CITU, its president M Y Tarigami said that unabated price escalation of essential commodities has broken the back of general masses especially the working class and toiling labourers. He said the neo-liberal policies have only led to retrenchment of workers and violation of labour laws, creating unprecedented grim scenario in the country. Only a few capitalists and business groups have amassed wealth through these policies, which is projected as economic growth and progress, he said and added that the gap between haves and have-nots is on constant rise. He flayed the Central Govt. for providing four stimulus packages worth lakhs of crores of rupees to the big business units and corporate houses without linking them with the job protection resultantly gross profit earned by the corporate sector increased by around 36% every year including 2008-09 and 2009-10.
He also flayed Central Government for deregulating prices of petroleum products, saying the step has resulted in the unprecedented price rise proving cumbersome for the poor and working class people. Calling for releasing buffer stocks from FCI godowns without any delay, he said distribution of these food grains under PDS is the only alternative to tide over the crisis and provide scour to the BPL population.
Demanding 100 % absorption of locals in class-C and class-D posts in Chenab Valley Power Projects and other industrial units in the State, he said the move will go a long way in addressing unemployment problems in Jammu and Kashmir.
He also pleaded to increase in the workdays under MGNREGA to 200 days in a year and extension of the scheme to urban areas, enhance the wages of the Anganwadi employees and provide them with social security benefits etc.
