EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 24: Model Institute of Engineering and Technology, Kot Bhalwal, Jammu today added another feather in its cap by becoming the first private institution in the State to file two patents at the Indian Patent Office, Delhi.
Both the patents filed are in the domain of computer science/information technology. Dr. Ankur Gupta, Joint Director MIET is the principal-inventor on both the patents, while Sahfqat Shamim, Systems Manager, MIET is the co-inventor on one of the patents. Chairman, MIER, Dr. Arun K. Gupta termed the filing of the two patents as historic and a major landmark for the institution. Congratulating the inventors, he expressed hope that this achievement shall inspire other budding researchers to follow suit and firmly establish the research culture at MIET. He hoped that students too shall actively participate in all local research initiatives in future. Director, MIER group Dr. Renu Gupta and Principal, MIET Maj. Gen (Retd.) Prof. S.K Sharma also lauded the achievement of the inventors.
The first patent filed by Dr. Ankur Gupta individually pertains to the domain of Network Management and aims to reduce the Mean-time-to-Detect for network faults, while the second patent filed jointly by Dr. Ankur Gupta and Shafqat Shamim proposes an efficient method for migrating licensed applications and associated data to a target platform with minimal user intervention. Both patents have potential commercial application, a fact acknowledged by the inventors. Dr. Ankur Gupta who has previously worked with Hewlett-Packard for more than 7 years already has two patents pending at the USPTO with HP. He opined that engineering institutes need to produce industry-relevant research more than just academic papers to bridge the gap between the industry and academia. Research needs to be oriented towards practical real-world applications to make it more relevant in today’s scenario.
