Jammu gears for Christmas celebrations, people in festive mood | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 24: With Christmas round the corner, Jammu is gearing up to celebrate the festival in religious harmony. It had been a tough year for Jammu and Kashmir but people are hopeful that Santa Claus will definitely spread cheer in the depressing winters of Kashmir. “In the past 15-year of unrest, Christmas celebration was never affected in anyway. Our prayers for Jammu and Kashmir are that there should be at peace because Jesus is the prince of peace. We pray there should be peace and bond in each of our hearts,” says a local Robin Gill. Hotels and Churches across the city have been illuminated to grace the day. The religious tolerance in this state has not taken a beating despite two decades of militancy. “We are doing this to appreciate the small community, to show solidarity with them and appreciation to the world in the field of modern education and medicine and healthcare,” says a leading hotelier Krishan Amla. Christians are a minority community in Jammu and Kashmir. And in the Valley, there are only around 20-25 native Catholic Christian families. Most of the Christians in the Valley are from outside who work here, said Father Mathew. They are mostly from Punjab, Bihar, Orissa and Maharastra, he added. Christmas is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was born in small stable of Jerusalem.
