Family protests against in-laws as woman dies of burns at hospital
12/25/2010 12:15:03 AM
JAMMU: As the divorced woman, who Thursday burnt herself at Bhatindi Morh here, today died at the GMC hospital, her family held a protest, alleging the hand of her ex-husband and in-laws in the incident.
Deepika Gupta of Rehari had set herself afire at Bhatindi Morh in full public view yesterday after an alleged tiff with divorced husband Rohit Sharma.
The couple, married about an year back, separated nearly two months ago after some differences cropped up between them. Theirs was a love marriage.
Rohit worked in a office near Bhatindi Morh. Deepika, who was under depression after the divorce, also joined the office two days ago as a trainee, police sources said.
Sources said there was an alleged tiff between them yesterday after which she came out of the office and set herself ablaze. With 70 per cent burns, she was admitted to the GMC hospital where she died this morning.
Soon thereafter, her family members held a strong demonstration at the hospital, alleging that Rohit had forced her to commit suicide. They alleged that her in-laws also used to torture her. Some of them later went to Bhatindi Morh and held a demonstration there too.
After post-mortem, the body was handed over to her family for last rites. The angry family members took the body home at Rehari where they blocked the road outside their residence.
Senior police officers, who reached the spot, assured them that justice would be done in the case and the guilty punished. Following the police assurance, they cleared the road.
The body was later consigned to flames.
