| Muslim scholar of Shaivism to translate 77 Shiv Sutras in Kashmiri language | | |
JAMMU, Dec 24: When entire Kashmir is burning with hatred and
Violence there has emerged a hope with some Muslims openly advocating for restoration of the age old composite culture of Valley. One of such intellectual Muslims is Dr M H Zafar, Director Kashmir Study Centre and a renowned scholar of Kashmiri Shaivism.
Dr Zafar who had done his doctorate in Kashmiri Shaivism is has taken an onus to himself in bridging the gulf among the people created due to the narrow communal and caste considerations. Earlier this luminary has read many papers in various seminars conducted in different parts of the country on Kashmiri Shaivism. He has also made references to great mystic poets of Kashmir Lal Ded and Nund Rishi who too had a great influence of Kashmiri Shavism and its philosophy.
Dr Zafar who is a great admirer of rich philosophy of Kashmiri Shaivism and also of its great scholars including Vasav Gupt, Abhinav Gupt, Jawan Raj and Ksheminder regrets that ``we have failed to preserve this rich treasure’’Zafar is on a task of translating 77Shiv Sutras of Vasav Gupt in Kashmiri. The scholar who is presently in Jammu in connection with presentation of translation of Shiv Sutras which is basic and fundamental of Kashmiri Shaivism translated by him along with commentary.
There are already two commentaries on these shiv sutras one by Kshem Raj and another by Bhaskar and Dr Zafar
Has taken care of both commentaries. Though the shiv Sutras have been translated in different languages of the world including French, Italian, German and English but unfortunately this translation is not available in Kashmiri, said Dr Zafar. ``I have tried to trace the continuity of the spiritual tradition right from composition of Shiv Sutras i e 8th Century upto present times’’ he added.
The author has tried to present the translation in contemporary idiom and the effort has been made to demonstrate that the tradition does not belong in a museum but has relevance in contemporary philosophical, spiritual and cultural continuity of Kashmiri people.
The translation will be published simultaneously in Persian and Devnagiri scripts in near future by the Institute of Kashmiri Study Centre Hazratbal, Srinagar.
The time will only tell that how far Dr Zafar will succeed in his endeavour in tying the two communities of Kashmiri Hindus and Muslims together with a common chord by reminding them of their rich cultural heritages dating back to the period of eighth century.
